But, Diana, why Japan?
Why Japan? Where do I begin? Here, I’ll try to make it simple: infinity has always been a very attractive thing.
Like a lot of people, I was first introduced to Japan through manga and anime. Little did I know back then that Japan would soon become one of my main interests. You see, if there’s something I like, it’s learning new things and uncovering mysteries. With Japan, the new and the mysterious never ends. That’s where infinity comes in.
The food, the language, the etiquette, the way of thinking… Everything Japanese seems so foreign to me that my brain only comes up with questions. I can’t ever hope to get to the bottom of it all, but at least I can try and scratch the surface.
To me, putting my application up for the Kakehashi project was a way for me to try and scratch that surface, but not just in any way. I didn’t want to just show up in Japan and wander around.
Thanks to the Kakehashi project, I get to go to Japan as a part of a collective that has been building a bridge, a safe place of exchange, between Canada and Japan for many years. As a person, I may not mean much in the long run, but to me, being part of the common effort that strives to let two culture exchange in peace is something important, especially in our frail world. It makes scratching the surface meaningful.
